{"id":649,"date":"2015-02-09T01:36:04","date_gmt":"2015-02-09T01:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.socom.com.au\/?p=649"},"modified":"2017-12-04T22:23:06","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T22:23:06","slug":"setting-objectives-during-a-crisis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.socom.com.au\/setting-objectives-during-a-crisis\/","title":{"rendered":"Setting objectives during a crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Failure to set and agree on clear objectives seems to cause problems for many, especially when they need to be SMART (Specific Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely).\u00a0 The same applies in a crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, in the midst of an organisational crisis, I experienced the same.\u00a0 It resulted in some confusion when it came to the communication methodology with two potentially conflicting agendas.\u00a0 One was focused on legal imperatives and the need to avoid litigation and the other focused on protecting the organisation\u2019s reputation.<\/p>\n<p>I attempted to clarify this with the team but there were conflicting views and because the team were spread across the globe, the issue kept getting avoided during teleconferences.<\/p>\n<p>The communication material and action plan were drafted to minimise any reputational damage, based on the tone of the discussion.\u00a0 At the 11<sup>th<\/sup> hour, before an announcement was made, the material was changed.\u00a0 The strategist behind the gameplay was extremely clever but was unable to communicate his plan.<\/p>\n<p>As it turned out, there were no negative impacts and the final outcome achieved the key goals (once they became clear).\u00a0 However, a great deal of effort and time could have been saved if these goals were known at the outset.\u00a0 When I read about poorly handled crises, I wonder if the team set objectives at the outset or tried to manage the response in an ad hoc fashion.<\/p>\n<p>To me, setting clear objectives is critical, especially in a <a href=\"\/\" title=\"Crisis Management\">crisis response<\/a>.\u00a0 As quoted by an American General \u201cIf you get the objectives right, most Lieutenants can write the strategy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I would be interested in others\u2019 experience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Failure to set and agree on clear objectives seems to cause problems for many, especially when they need to be SMART (Specific Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely).\u00a0 The same applies in a crisis.
