Gippsland Water Factory

In early 2006 Socom prepared a comprehensive communications strategy for the Gippsland Water Factory. It incorporates public, stakeholder and internal communications, issue and crises management and evaluation.  The communications strategy provides the framework for communications activities over the life of the project, which Socom will be implementing until 2008.

The Gippsland Water Factory will be an innovative wastewater treatment and recycling facility that will be located in the Latrobe Valley in the Gippsland region of Victoria.  It will be the first of its kind in Australia.

The facility is being built to address the 50-year-old issue of the Regional Outfall Sewer and subsequent odours from the open channel section of this sewer.  The open sewer has been a source of significant community concern for a number of years.  The Latrobe Valley contains industry which is of state and national significance, including power generators.  These industries are a major user of water, with up to 70% of the water provided by Gippsland Water being allocated to these industrial users.

The project has enormous potential to address to odours from the Regional Outfall Sewer and provide an alternative water supply to local industry.  It will also provide a number of local jobs during construction and protect the environment, including Gippslands fragile waterways.  With such State significance, communications with the community and stakeholders, including State Government, will be critical to the projects success.
