- A major remediation project at the former Gas and Fuel gasworks was underway between 2001-08
- Socom created a communications and crisis management plan
- The site was restored for use again with minimal community impact
Campaign:
From 2001-2008, Socom worked with the Victorian Government Property Group and VicUrban providing community and media communications and crisis management for a major remediation project at the former Gas and Fuel gasworks and research centre at Highett, in Melbourne’s south-east.
The project involved demolition of buildings and decontamination of soil to create a brownfield development site. While the site has a busy highway and a railway line on two boundaries, it has commercial and residential neighbours on the other two sides.
Our Approach:
Socom created a communication plan and a crisis plan, prepared and distributed regular project updates to neighbours, project managed a time-lapse video of the project, and monitored and analysed media coverage relating to the site.
Results:
When remediation work commenced in the second half of 2005, the Department of Treasury and Finance assumed communication responsibility, with Socom continuing to assist with ad-hoc community relations services and ongoing management of the time-lapse video production.
